Poetry in Jane Austen’s Works SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 9, 2012 - 1:30-4:00 PM Cleveland Public Library - SOLON BRANCH We know that Jane Austen grew up in a literary family, and that she filled her novels with literary references that would have been obvious to well-read contemporaries. Along with references to novels and plays, Austen also used contemporary poetry to give depth to her characters and add nuance to her plots. For this meeting, our RC Jennifer Weinbrecht will lead a discussion about Austen’s use of poetry in her novels, with Program Committee member Tom Sudik contributing. Meet Author Amy Elizabeth Smith July 14, 2012 1:00PM to 4:00 PM at Jane Austen Books Amy Elizabeth Smith, author of a new book, All Roads Lead to Austen , will visit Jane Austen Books for a special meeting for JASNA ONC members and guests on July 14, 2012. Amy left her job as a professor for a year to travel and teach in Latin America. She held reading groups on Jane Austen in six different countries. Amy’s book describes her experiences and brings wonderful insights into Jane Austen and how she is received in different countries. And it’s great fun! The book will be available at the store for those who want to purchase it, but we know you’ll be pleased just to meet Amy and hear her talk about her experiences.  The bookstore will be open for shopping. We'll be celebrating an amazing year of JASNA programs with an end-of-year luncheon in lovely Chardon, Ohio. Originally, we planned to discuss articles in the journal Persuasions at our annual luncheon, but we have not yet received our journals. So, we are having a little change of plans. The theme of this year’s AGM, Sex, Money, and Power in Jane Austen’s Fiction, is bringing together scholars and authors from around the world to New York City this October for a record-breaking conference. We invite members to read brief passages written by Jane Austen that are relevant to the AGM theme. Feel free to read excerpts from her novels, juvenilia, letters, and even Lady Susan! Bring Your Own Books. We return to Bass Lake Taverne ( map ) this year for a lovely soup and salad buffet. Lunch, beverage, gratuity and dessert are included for $25. We had an overflow crowd for our April meeting in Clark Hall on the Case-Western Reserve Campus, since it had been advertised in The Cleveland Plain Dealer, and on a local radio station. Our guests were Karen Doornebos, author of Definitely Not Mr. Darcy , and Sandy Lerner, who writes under the name of Ava Farmer. Ms. Lerner’s book is Second Impressions . She also is the founder of the Chawton House Library. Sandy Lerner reads from her book Karen Doornebos entertains the crowd No empty seats! Each author discussed her work and Ms. Lerner told us about her desire to preserve writings by the approximately 3,000 women who wrote during the 19th century. The ladies had a question and answer period and autographed their books for us. Jane Austen Books was also on hand with a sampling of their wares. She now spends her time on her organic farm in Virginia, contemplating cows and the scourge which is industralized, chemical agriculture. She is also the author of a now-obsolete dictionary of terms related to digital music, and the translator/editor of an old book on carriage driving. Her deep love of Jane Austen's works eventually led her to purchase Chawton House, the estate Austen's brother inherited, on which her cottage was situated.
